Sponsored by Kalgidhar Trust, the Eternal University was established by Act No. 3 of 2009 by the Himachal Pradesh government. The University has been offering more than 65 UG to Ph.D. programs in basic and applied sciences, engineering & technology, agriculture, biotechnology, food technology, nursing, economics, commerce, management, music, education, psychology, languages, and arts through its seven constituent colleges which are duly recognized by UGC, AICTE, NCTE, INC, DSIR, DRDO, DBT and furthermore. The University has been recently accredited by NAAC and over some time, it has been transformed as the first exclusively girl’s residential University in northern India and now the only girls’ university in Himachal Pradesh.

The Eternal University has been rated among the three top private universities in Himachal Pradesh in the Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements announced by Hon’ble Vice President of India on August 18, 2020.

The Eternal University was one of the first private universities in Himachal Pradesh to establish Akal College of Nursing and Akal College of Agriculture for the girl students now named Dr. Khem Singh Gill Akal College of Agriculture.

The Leading Forces

To translate the vision of value-based education of the visionary saints to thousands of students, His Holiness Baba Iqbal Singh, former Director of Agriculture, Himachal Pradesh, President of Kalgidhar Trust, and the present Chancellor of Eternal University, Baru Sahib and Padam Bhushan Late Dr. Khem Singh Gill, former Vice-Chancellor of PAU, Ludhiana and Vice President of Kalgidhar Trust established the first Akal Academy at Baru Sahib with a few students in 1986 leading to the development of a network of 130 CBSE affiliated Akal Academies in the six states of northern India and two universities, Eternal University, Baru Sahib and Akal University, Talwandi Sabo, Bathinda, Punjab.

Dr. Manmohan Singh Atwal, USA was the Founder and Vice-Chancellor of the Eternal University. Dr. Harcharan Singh Dhaliwal, also associated with the university, was the first student of his village to go to a college to pursue B. Sc. (Hons) Agriculture from Panjab University Chandigarh with a scholarship from ICAR, New Delhi. He further did M.Sc. (Hons) Plant Breeding from PAU, Ludhiana in 1969, and Ph.D. from the University of California, Riverside in 1975. He had discovered a diploid wheat species Triticum urartu the A-genome donor of bread wheat during his Ph. D. He developed one of the first Plant Biotechnology Centre in India at PAU, Ludhiana, furthermore joined and worked as its founder director and professor biotechnology till 2003.

Later, he moved to the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee as a Distinguished Professor Biotechnology, where he led a group on biofortification of wheat for high grain iron and zinc content to alleviate the widespread hidden hunger in developing countries. After retiring from IIT, Roorkee in 2011, he joined the Eternal University, Baru Sahib as Distinguished Professor Biotechnology and then it’s Vice Chancellor till August 13, 2020. During his five decades-long careers, he had visited and worked in many advanced institutions in the USA, Japan, Israel, Switzerland, Australia, and Mexico. He has published more than 250 original research articles, carried out 30 research projects funded by national and international research organizations, and has actively participated in several task forces, RAC and PAC of DBT and ICAR, New Delhi as Chairman and member. His contributions as a scientist and administrator have been recognized through several awards and honors.

There is ample provision of Choice Based Credit System in all the professional courses on the pattern of foreign universities for ensuring diverse training, career goals, and adjustment of students in India and abroad. All the undergraduate and postgraduate students are helped and encouraged to spend their last semester for their thesis, project work, training, and certification with the industry.

Because of its strategic location in the mid-Himalaya, the university has focused to explore, evaluate, maintain, and utilize the valuable germplasm of medicinal and aromatic plants and functional fruit, vegetable and field crops of the region, with this it has already developed and tested the wheat and maize cultivars with improved nutritional quality and herbal formulations from the medicinal plants of the region.

Quick to Take On the COVID-19 Crisis

With the sudden closures of the educational institutions due to lockdowns, the faculty, staff, and students are stuck at home since their Holi vacation. However with time, the university has developed digital teaching, learning, and evaluation portals shared amongst the faculty and students to take up academic work from April as per the academic calendars. This has indeed proved as a blessing in disguise for change in the mindsets of the faculty and students towards digital teaching and learning. The online education encourages students to access additional knowledge and save time for more practical training, certification, and skill development. The university is getting ready to bring back its faculty and students to the campus as soon as permitted and will provide the required monitoring, quarantine, and social distancing facilities at the campus to fight COVID-19 so that all the essential academic requirements of the students could be fulfilled.

The Chancellor of the Eternal University aims for girl’s education and women empowerment as a service to mankind. He firmly believes that an educated woman can successfully turn her dreams into realities and become an archetype for the society. Because of the strategic location and safest environment, this prominent institution is likely to become an educational hub for girls from other states and countries.

With our major efforts on promoting industry-academia linkage for project work, training, skill and entrepreneurial development, collaborative research, and technology transfer, the students will become proficient and affluent. There will be now more emphasis on digital teaching and flipped classrooms for providing diverse and advanced knowledge while leaving more time for practical training, skill development, and innovation. The university is exploring the opportunity of collaborating with professional universities abroad to exchange faculty and students for project work, collaborative research, teaching, integrated, and dual degrees in due course of time.

The MoUs with industries, institutions in India and abroad, and the establishment of Innovation and Incubation centers at the campus have already been initiated with the vision of involving faculty and students in innovation and technology development. With the kind support of the Kalgidhar Trust and all the stakeholders, it is envisaged to make this Eternal University a center of academic and innovation excellence within a short time.
